A couple of baseball elders have been on the baseball transaction wire lately, with Jesse Orosco being traded to the Yankees and Rickey Henderson leaving Newark to sign with the Dodgers. Friend of the Donk Keith forwarded me the following chain that puts the 46-year-old Orosco's longevity in perspective, to which I added a similar exercise for Rickey.
- Jesse Orosco played with Ed Kranepool (in 1979)
who played with Yogi Berra (in 1965)
who played with Fordham Johnny Murphy (in 1946)
who played with Babe Ruth (in 1934).
- Rickey Henderson played with Phil Niekro (in 1985)
who played with Warren Spahn (in 1964)
who played with Billy Herman (in 1946)
who played with Rogers Hornsby (in 1931).
For those of you who like this sort of thing, Baseball Primer had a similar piece a few years back focusing on Mike Morgan, "the Nexus of the Baseball Universe."
